We say &#8220;I have a headache&#8221; as if it were a single thing \u2013 and that&#8217;s the first mistake \u2013 because there are several types of headache, with different causes and, above all, different solutions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowing which one you have is the first step to stop taking pills blindly. The <strong>migraine<\/strong> is more disabling and has a neurological component. And the <strong>forward head posture<\/strong> in front of screens chronically tenses the neck, irritating the structures that connect neck and head: that&#8217;s the direct origin of cervicogenic headache and an aggravator of the tension type.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Translated: many headaches &#8220;in the head&#8221; actually start in the neck and jaw.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warning signs: when it&#8217;s NOT &#8220;a normal headache&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vast majority of headaches are benign. But there are warnings that mean you should seek medical attention without delay to rule out something serious:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u26a0\ufe0f Seek urgent attention if the headache:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li>Is <strong>sudden and explosive<\/strong>, &#8220;the worst of your life&#8221;, in under a minute.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Comes with <strong>fever and a stiff neck<\/strong> (you can&#8217;t lower your chin to your chest).<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Appears <strong>after a blow<\/strong> to the head, or gets worse over the days.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Comes with a <strong>neurological deficit<\/strong>: weakness, numbness, difficulty speaking, double vision, confusion.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Wakes you at night<\/strong> or is worse when you get up, with nausea or vomiting.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Is <strong>new after the age of 50<\/strong>, or changes pattern if you already had headaches.<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What really works: beyond the pill<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Managing common headaches is multimodal, and drugs are neither the first thing nor the only thing.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li><strong>Stress management.<\/strong> Relaxation, breathing, mindfulness and cognitive behavioural therapy reduce the frequency and intensity of tension headaches and migraines.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Regular exercise.<\/strong> Moderate, consistent aerobic activity: one of the pillars, with solid evidence.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Sleep hygiene.<\/strong> Regular schedules make a difference.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Manual therapy and physiotherapy<\/strong> for <strong>tension and cervicogenic headache<\/strong>: neck mobilisations, trigger-point work and, above all, exercise. The combination gives the best results.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Migraine<\/strong>: acute treatment of the attacks and, if frequent, preventive treatment. Here an assessment by a neurologist is advisable.<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u26a0\ufe0f Beware of painkiller overuse.<\/strong> Taking painkillers many days a month (more than 10\u201315, depending on the drug) can, paradoxically, <strong>chronify<\/strong> the pain: it&#8217;s &#8220;medication-overuse headache&#8221;. If you need pills almost daily, it&#8217;s a sign that a plan is needed, not more pills.<\/p>\n\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to see someone?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond the warning signs, it&#8217;s worth booking an appointment if: you have a headache more than once a week; it interferes with your work, sleep or social life; painkillers don&#8217;t work or you need them very often; or the pattern of your headaches changes. A practical tip: keep a small <strong>headache diary<\/strong> (when, how much, what you took, what you were doing). It&#8217;s gold for getting the diagnosis right.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In short<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s go back to that band squeezing your temples at the end of the day. Now you know it isn&#8217;t just &#8220;a headache&#8221;: it has a type, some causes and \u2013 very often \u2013 an origin in the neck, the jaw or the stress that you really can work on.
