Frequently Asked Questions
Does it hurt when it "cracks"?
Usually, nothing at all. For most patients, the adjustment is actually quite relieving because it immediately relieves pressure on the joint and the surrounding nerves. The noise might startle you a little the first time, but it shouldn’t cause any pain.
Where is that "crunching" sound coming from? Is something breaking?
Don’t worry: no bones are broken or scraped. With a quick, precise push, the joint space expands slightly. As the pressure drops, the gases dissolved in the synovial fluid (such as carbon dioxide) form a small bubble that bursts instantly. It’s the same principle as when you pop the cork on a bottle of champagne.
How is it different from osteopathy and physical therapy?
The three disciplines complement each other well, but they have different approaches:
- Chiropractic: focuses on the spine, the nervous system, and the joints (adjustment).
- Osteopathy: It uses a gentle, holistic approach and also addresses organs and fascia.
- Physical therapy: focuses on muscles, tendons, and restoring movement through exercise.
Is chiropractic care dangerous? (The issue of stroke)
In the hands of a professional with solid training, the treatment is very safe: available studies indicate that the risk of serious complications in the cervical spine is very low. It’s important to note, however, that in Spain, chiropractic is not yet a regulated health profession. That’s why it’s essential to choose a professional trained according to European standards (ECCE) and registered with the Spanish Chiropractic Association (AEQ). A safety check is also performed before each treatment.
How many sessions will I need?
It’s as unique as your fingerprint. For acute blockages, 1 to 3 sessions are sometimes enough. For chronic discomfort that has developed over the years, it’s common to develop a treatment plan lasting several weeks or months to stabilize the body over the long term.
Does my insurance cover it?
In Spain, chiropractic care is not covered by Social Security. Some private policies or supplemental insurance plans provide partial reimbursement under their “complementary medicine” coverage, but this varies greatly depending on the specific company and plan. It’s best to check the specific terms of your policy before you begin.
Can't I "get high" on my own?
Better not. When you “crack” your neck or back on your own, you almost always strain joints that are already too loose (hypermobile). The joint that’s actually locked remains fixed, while the surrounding joints get overstretched more and more. In the long run, this leads to more instability and more pain.
Can I see a chiropractor while I'm pregnant?
Yes, and it’s usually highly recommended. Hormonal changes cause the ligaments to loosen, and your weight shifts forward. Specially gentle techniques (and positioning pillows) are used to keep the pelvis balanced, which can relieve back pain and make childbirth easier.
Do I need a referral from my doctor?
No. Since this is a private practice, you can make an appointment directly, without having to see your primary care physician first.
Does it also help with discomfort that isn't in the back?
Sometimes, yes. Since the nervous system runs along the spine, tension in that area can affect other parts of the body; that is why many patients also seek treatment for headaches, migraines, or dizziness. It is best to view it as a complementary approach, not as a substitute for a medical diagnosis when symptoms persist.
