Frequently asked questions
Does it hurt when it 'cracks'?
Usually nothing at all. For most patients the adjustment feels rather liberating, because it immediately relieves the pressure on the joint and the surrounding nerves. The noise can give you a little fright the first time, but there shouldn’t be any pain.
Where does that 'crack' come from? Does something break?
Don’t worry: no bone breaks or rubs. With the quick, precise impulse, the joint space widens minimally. As the pressure drops, the gases dissolved in the joint fluid (such as carbon dioxide) form a small bubble that bursts instantly. It’s the same principle as uncorking a bottle of cava.
How does it differ from osteopathy and physiotherapy?
The three disciplines complement each other well, but they have different approaches:
- Chiropractic: focuses on the spine, the nervous system and the joints (the adjustment).
- Osteopathy: works gently and holistically, and also includes organs and fascia.
- Physiotherapy: focuses on the muscles, tendons and restoring movement through exercise.
Is chiropractic dangerous? (the stroke question)
In the hands of a well-trained professional, the treatment is very safe: the available studies indicate that the risk of serious complications at the cervical level is very low. It’s worth knowing, however, that in Spain chiropractic is not yet a regulated healthcare profession. That’s why it’s essential to choose a professional trained to European standards (ECCE) and registered with the Spanish Chiropractic Association (AEQ). A safety check is also carried out before each treatment.
How many sessions will I need?
It’s as individual as your fingerprint. For an acute blockage, 1 to 3 sessions are sometimes enough. For chronic complaints that have built up over years, the usual approach is a treatment plan of several weeks or months to stabilise the body in the long term.
Is it covered by my insurance?
In Spain, chiropractic is not covered by Social Security. Some private policies or supplementary insurance reimburse it partially within their ‘complementary medicine’ services, but it depends a lot on the company and the plan. The most practical thing is to check the specific terms of your policy before starting.
Can't I 'adjust' myself?
Better not. When you ‘crack’ your own neck or back, you almost always force the joints that are already too loose (hypermobile). The truly blocked joint stays stuck, while the ones around it get overstretched more and more. In the long term this creates more instability and more pain.
Can I see a chiropractor during pregnancy?
Yes, and it’s often highly advisable. With hormonal changes the ligaments loosen and weight shifts forward. Especially gentle techniques (and positioning cushions) are used to keep the pelvis balanced, which can ease back pain and help with the birth.
Do I need a referral from a doctor?
No. As this is a private consultation, you can book an appointment directly, without going through your GP first.
Does it also help with complaints that aren't in the back?
Sometimes yes. Since the nervous system runs along the spine, tension in that area can affect other parts of the body; that’s why many patients also come for headaches, migraines or dizziness. It’s best to see it as complementary support, not a substitute for a medical diagnosis when symptoms persist.
